To say it’s a long time since Maryhill last won the Scottish Junior Cup is kind of stating the bleeding obvious!

April 1940 was the last time they lifted the country’s premier junior competition, with the national trophy now resembling the Holy Grail to the Lochburn Park club.

I started watching my home town club many moons ago and always looked forward to – and still do – the draw for the early rounds of the cup. Part of the romance is being paired with an obscure team away from home and heading into the unknown for a “few” on the day of the game.

Of course we all want to win it, and Maryhill fans long for the day when the (current) seven-decade-and-some trophy drought is finally ended.

This 76-page booklet was written to celebrate Maryhill’s glorious Scottish Cup win of 1940, and includes a blow-by-blow account of how they got to the final – won the trophy – and much more.

The book also offers a flavour of what life was like in the period covered (season 1939/40), what was on the wireless (no TVs back then!) and lots more to peruse.
It was the first project I had tackled with any degree of seriousness and it was a real labour of love. It also sold very well – so much so that it’s easier to get your hands on a copy of the Magna Carta than Maryhill FC: Class of 1940!
